Memento Mori Ceramics

Ngāti Porou Ngāti Kahungunu

At the base of Maungatautari mountain in Cambridge, Memento Mori Ceramics is where Tonia Geddes and Lee Johnston bring their passion for art, ceramics, and living life fully to life. Guided by the Latin phrase memento mori | carpe diem, the duo are reminded to live boldly and with purpose, creating unique ceramic pieces that celebrate both art and sustainable living.

Their small studio is not only where they craft their beautiful ceramicware but also where they share their love of ceramics with the community through workshops, fostering connection and creativity.

Our Journey Together

After more than 20 years in the film industry’s Art Departments, Lee felt the need for a more fulfilling, creative path. Inspired by the ceramicware created for The Hobbit film production, he embarked on a new journey with Tonia. Tonia, with her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Canterbury University and a background as a Visual Arts teacher and art gallery director, joined Lee to explore the world of clay. Together, they designed their first ceramics and began their journey in the pottery world.

In their collaboration, Lee shapes the pieces on the wheel, while Tonia applies her painting skills, preps and glazes the bisqueware, and incorporates hand-building techniques. Their joint efforts result in pieces that reflect both their expertise and shared vision.

Our Studio and Inspiration

Memento Mori Ceramics is based in their country studio nestled at the foot of Maungatautari mountain in the beautiful Waikato region. For Lee, it was a return to his hometown of Cambridge, while Tonia found new inspiration in the area. Their whakaruruhau (shelter) is both a place of peace and creativity, offering the perfect environment for crafting ceramics that reflect the natural beauty and tranquil spirit of the region.

Their Philosophy

At Memento Mori Ceramics, the philosophy of living life intentionally and with passion is at the heart of everything the team does. The Latin phrase memento mori serves as a reminder to appreciate each fleeting moment, guiding their creative process. Each ceramic piece they craft is more than just an object—it’s an invitation for others to embrace life fully, appreciate the present, and connect with the beauty of the world around them.
